"Dale End" - An 'N' Gauge layout built by Roger Elkin

Dale End is an 'N' gauge layout that was originally designed for exhibition use, but is now in a modified form in retirement for home use only. The layout represents a fictitious part of the Midland main line through the Peak District in the 1960's with a mixture of steam and green diesel locos. The former main line has now been reduced to a single track and the line closed completely beyond Dale End.

Running past the cottages

Originally the layout was modelled as a through station with a fiddle yard at each end. Due to lack of space in its present home, one fiddle yard has been dispensed with, and the station has been converted into a terminus, and the main line reduced to a single track. On the other hand, a small single road engine shed has been added on the site of the former second track of the main line. The track is Peco, and the working colour light signals are by Berko. Locos and stock are mainly Graham Farish, Peco or Minitrix, with a few kit-built locos on ready-to run chassis.

Shunting the wagons

The buildings are a mixture of plastic and card kits and scratch-built items, all representing local Derbyshire stone. The scratch-built structures are made from a shell of plastic card, covered with a thin layer of Das modelling clay, which has the stone pattern added while the clay is still soft using a home-made resin embossing tool.

Passengers board the DMU

The layout is operated to a sequence timetable representing a typical day's services, including a portion of a through express to St. Pancras, semi-fast services to Sheffield and local services to Buxton and Manchester, as well as freight and parcels trains.

The pictures show:
