The Grüntalbahn - by John Green

I built the Grüntalbahn when I retired and joined the Holtwhites MRC, which then met in the sports pavilion of the Great Northern Athletic Association (GNAA) in Holtwhites Hill, Enfield. I chose to model Austrian narrow gauge railways because many years ago I had travelled on some of them. Then, when I saw some Lilliput coaches being sold off, I bought some, mainly Salzkammergutlokalbahn (SKGLB) and Zillertalbahn (ZB). I had travelled on the ZB more than once, and remembered the SKGLB from reading "The End Of The Line" by Bryan Morgan.

The 'Summerhouse'

A general view

I used a piece of 4' by 2' Sundeala board that I had in the garage. The biggest difficulty I had was getting smooth curves 9" radius in 'crazy track' round the ends of the board. Now, 15 years on it is getting rather tired and I intend to rebuild it on two 3' by 2' boards. That would give longer loops and a more prototypical station. I'm going to try 'Setrack' for the curves at the end of the boards this time.

I have a copy of "Von Salzburg Nach Bad Ischl" by J.O.Slezak, this gives diagrams of all the SKGLB stations. I'd like to find a suitable kit to bash as I'm not really a scratchbuilder, but I just fancy the SKGLB.

The station area

We have moved house this year and I now have a railway summerhouse in the garden (see picture top left), and have built shelving with layout storage, it will hold 4' by 2' sections, with up to 9' in use on the top. Expect nothing in a hurry, but now our Webmaster has jollied me into writing this and putting some new photos onto a CD, first time! I might become enthusiastic and get on with it.
