"St. Paul's Road" - Our Club 'EM' Gauge Layout

Part three (continued from Part 2).

St. Paul's Road was mooted on November 2005. Due to circumstances beyond our control construction could not begin until June 2006, but that time allowed detailed planning to take place. We called the layout St Paul's Road because we meet at the St. Paul's Centre in Enfield.

The baseboards and trestles, started in June 2006, were completed in June 2007. There isn't a lot of time at Club meetings, so progress was inevitably slow. Track laying started in June 2007, and the lower level track was laid and ballasted by the middle of August. The points were 'acquired' and only needed tweaking, saving a lot of time and effort.

Some small changes were made to the original design. The baseboards are wider at 21 inches. The curve into the goods yard meant there was more space available, allowing a permanent way siding to be added. Altering the siding arrangement gave a more flowing appearance, without cluttering the area. A revised track plan has been added for reference (see below).

Wiring has started. The track plan will be drawn underneath the baseboard at the same time; experience has shown us that it makes life so much easier trying to trace faults at a later date, particularly at exhibitions. While that is happening a start can be made on the upper level pointwork, and noises have been made about starting on buildings. Any buildings on the photos above are to give an idea of the appearance; they will definitely not be the final ones. The first loco to run on the layout was Martin's class 15, on 23rd August.

Revised track plan

Progress now should be more rapid as it's easier for members to work on different areas, and more can be done at home (such as the buildings). And there are now more members involved.

Part four of this article is now available describing point operation, the wiring method used and the fiddle yard storage cassettes.
